AI / MACHINE LEARNING ENGINEERING INTERN

Time Commitment: ~40 hours/week

About the Project
We’re building an AI-powered cost estimation engine that allows hospitals and patients to instantly understand healthcare costs based on insurance contracts, medical coding, and physician diagnosis — all in real time.
If you’re passionate about healthcare innovation, working with real messy data, and building models with impact, this is your summer.

What You’ll Do:

• Build and refine NLP/LLM pipelines to extract and normalize insurance plan documents, CPT codes, and contract terms
• Train models on publicly available ACA plans (Healthcare.gov, CMS APIs)
• Collaborate with the founders and a business intern to deliver a working MVP engine
• Work with real-world samples (de-identified contracts from physicians)
• Assist in deploying a prototype for testing with small clinics

Ideal Profile:

• MS or advanced undergrad in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field
• Strong Python skills (pandas, spaCy, PyTorch/TensorFlow, HuggingFace, etc.)
• Experience with NLP, transformers, and information extraction
• Comfortable working with healthcare-related data (a plus if you’ve worked with FHIR, HL7, CPT, or ICD)
• Entrepreneurial, curious, and able to work independently

Expected Outputs:

• Parser to convert unstructured insurance plans into structured benefit/price schema
• MVP API or prototype to estimate out-of-pocket costs for selected CPT codes
• Codebase documentation and data pipeline for ACA or clinic-sourced contracts
• Initial performance metrics (precision/recall for entity extraction or classification)
