NRMP -  A strong match to thousands of residency applicants and programs

NRMP -  The 2022 Match saw a significant increase. Take a peek behind the data.

According to the National Resident Matching Program, about half of the first-year positions offered in the 2021 Main Residency Match were in primary care, family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics, and the majority of these positions have been filled.

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) stated in a recent blog that it was able to provide a strong match to thousands of residency applicants and programs. "Primary care is seeing growth," according to the organization.

In the statement, NRMP President and CEO Donna L. Lamb, DHSc, MBA, BSN, remarked,
"We admire all Match participants for their hard work and commitment to train and serve alongside their peers".

“The application and recruitment cycle was upended as a result of the pandemic, yet the results of the Match continue to demonstrate strong and consistent outcomes for participants.”

According to NRMP, there were 38,106 posts available this year, which is a record high. Overall, 36,179 positions were filled, up 2.6 percent from the previous year.

The number of applicants also hit an "all-time high" of 48,700, up 8.3% over last year and the "highest single-year increase in recorded history," according to the NRMP.

Despite COVID and decreased opportunity for the IMGs to attend in-person rotations is the US, the percentage of the IMGs matched has gone up and hence indicates the necessity of IMGs in the US healthcare system.

According to the statement, the percentage of primary care positions filled by senior students fell somewhat (0.3 percent) from 2020, but there were gains in family medicine (63 more MD seniors matched) and internal medicine (93 more DO seniors matched).

The NRMP observed "sizeable increases" in positions for neurology (45.3 percent increase), family medicine (43.7 percent increase), emergency medicine (38.7% increase), primary medicine (29.3% increase), psychiatry (27.6% increase), and internal medicine (27.6% increase) over the last 5 years (24.8 percent increase). All five years, the fill rates for these specializations exceeded 92 percent.

The PGY-1 match rate for U.S. citizen international medical graduates climbed 1.9 percentage points to 61.4 percent, while it increased 3.3 percentage points to 58.1 percent for non-U.S. citizen international medical graduates.

It looks like a lot of young people are wanting to become physicians, and a lot of them are wanting to go into internal medicine, which is ultimately very positive.
