According to the latest NRMP Match Data, Internal Medicine is the most IMG-friendly specialty accounting for 38% of available positions filled by International Medical Graduates.​

Internal medicine residencies offer around 9700 categorical, 1850 preliminary, and 450 primary care positions, with a 20% increase in the last 5 years. 32% of PGY-1 positions are provided by 670 ACGME-accredited programs. Matched applicants consist of 35% IMGs.
Key highlights:
  • Average USMLE Step 1 scores for matched applicants are 226 for US IMGs and 237 for non-US IMGs.
  • Step 2 scores average 235 for US IMGs and 243 for non-US IMGs.
