In 2026, 9,682 international medical graduates (IMGs) matched into first-year U.S. medical residencies, accounting for approximately 23.6% of all matched applicants nationwide.This year's Match showcased a fascinating divergence based on citizenship status: U.S. IMGs achieved a record-high match rate of 70.0%. Meanwhile, Non-U.S. IMGs reached an absolute record high of 6,733 matched applicants, despite their match rate dipping to 56.4%. This slight rate decline for Non-U.S. IMGs is largely attributed to an increase in applicant volume and recent challenges surrounding visa sponsorships
