What's New in the 2024 MyERAS® Application

Mastering the 2024 MyERAS Application: What Aspirants Need to Know?

As the 2024 Match season approaches, we are thrilled to update you on the latest changes to the MyERAS Application.

Our goal is to ensure you are well-prepared to present your best self to residency programs and make a lasting impression.

What’s new in ERAS 2024!

  • Discontinuation of the Supplemental ERAS Application
  • Changes in the Experiences Section
  • Geographic Information
  • Program Signaling

Discontinuation of the Supplemental ERAS Application

The AAMC has discontinued the Supplemental ERAS application for the 2023-2024 USMLE Match season. Instead, program signaling, geographic preferences, and impactful clinical experiences are now integrated into the MyERAS application.

Why is it Better and Applicant-friendly?

The new ERAS 2024 streamlines the application process which allows a better profile analysis and saves time by aligning the ERAS application with your primary focus.

You get to highlight and give distinct mention to the major attractions in your USMLE profile.
The application now boldly speaks everything you want to make the program directors listen!

Changes in the Experiences Section

Limited the number of mention-able experiences: The 2024 MyERAS update allows a maximum of ten experiences. This encourages applicants to present meaningful and relevant experiences that truly highlight their strengths.

Meaningful experiences: USMLE Applicants can self-designate their top three clinical experiences as meaningful. This application feature provides insight into your priorities and values as aspiring physicians.

Detailed Description: With the updated ERAS application, residency programs will now have a clearer understanding of your contributions during each experience. Since you provide detailed information, including timeframes, frequencies, and roles held.

Additional experience types: The MyERAS application now includes categories like professional organizations and hobbies, enriching the perspective for reviewing programs.

Impactful Experiences: This section, previously part of the Supplemental ERAS application, offers a unique opportunity for applicants to narrate their challenges, hardships, or adversities that have shaped their journey to the US medical residency.

It's a chance to demonstrate your determination towards medicine and problem-solving skills in overcoming obstacles.

Geographic and Setting Preference

Also formerly part of the Supplemental ERAS application, USMLE applicants can now specify their locational and setting preferences (urban vs. rural) for medical residency.

Alternatively, applicants can indicate a lack of preference, showing their willingness to receive training anywhere in the US.

Program Signaling

This impactful feature simplifies the process for USMLE applicants to display their interest in a specific residency specialty and program.

Now the MyERAS application explicitly allows applicants to express particular interest in specific programs.

The number of signals available varies by residency specialty.

Therefore, applicants must carefully consider their application's strength before using program signaling for different programs.

What will change for the 2024 MyERAS Application?

MyERAS Application
for the 2023 Cycle
MyERAS Application
for the 2024 Cycle
No upper limit for mentionable experiences.
Up to 10 experiences only.
Not available
Enables applicants to self-select their top three most meaningful experiences (of up to 10 experiences)
Collected limited descriptive information about each experience entry (e.g., position, organization, timeframe, location).
Collects more descriptive information about each experience entry (e.g., position, organization, timeframe, location) as well as the frequency of participation (e.g., one time, daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually).
Not available
Allows applicants to better define the experience type (e.g. volunteer, work, professional organization, hobby). This helps programs to easily identify and review specific experiences that align with their mission(s)
Not available
Offers additional multiple-entry questions to capture mission-focused characteristics of each experience entry: focus area, key characteristic, and setting (e.g., rural, suburban, urban). This helps programs assess a holistic review.
Undefined Experiences Description field
Includes short descriptions focused on critical information for programs: roles, responsibilities, and context for all experiences entries
Hometown captured in a free text, non-standardized format
Uses standardized fields to collect all location-related information across the application (country, state, city, postal code, and setting) including hometown and addresses for experiences and education.
Not available
Provides applicants with the option to share their geographic preferences with US residency programs.
The new questions will capture applicants’ preferences for different regions of the U.S. and their setting preferences.
Now that MyERAS is the only application to conquer, make the most of these changes to prepare a stellar ERAS application.
