Key Important points for LOI
  1. Purpose - It will allow IMGs to convey their interest in a particular program
  2. To whom should you write it - Write it to all the programs you are interested in, addressing the Program Directors or Coordinator
  3. When to send it - Ideally write it immediately after you submit your Program List
  4. What to include in your LOI - Include your name, background information, and relevant experience or qualifications.

Let’s explore essential tips and provide a sample letter to help you stand out and increase your chances of landing the residency spot of your dreams.

1. Personalize:
Begin by researching the residency programs you're interested in. Address the letter to the program coordinator or residency program director if possible, showing that you've done your homework.

Highlight your qualifications and accomplishments, but don't simply restate your CV. Use this opportunity to explain how your experiences have shaped your passion for the specialty.

Example Body Paragraph

I believe my [mention your unique qualities, e.g., strong teamwork skills and dedication to patient-centered care] align well with your program's goals.

4. Express Gratitude and Interest
In the closing paragraph, reiterate your enthusiasm for the program and express gratitude for considering your application. Mention your availability for interviews.

Example Closing Paragraph

5. Professional Closure
End the letter with a professional closing, followed by your full name.

Example Signature:

Your Full Name
AAMC ID

6. Attachments and Follow-Up
If you include additional documents or references, list them. Keep track of which programs you've sent letters to and when. Be prepared to follow up if necessary.
